Splitleaf vs Lovable

Lovable builds and hosts apps from a chat, paid in credits every month. Splitleaf is a desktop app for websites you keep as files and pay for once. Compare what each one builds, how AI is charged, hosting and five-year cost.

Lovable builds apps from a chat. You describe what you want, and Lovable writes the code, hosts the result and runs the backend: database, logins, storage. Splitleaf is for websites. It runs on your Mac or Windows PC, and your site is a folder of HTML, CSS and Markdown files that you publish to your own host.

Both use AI to build. They differ in what they build, where it lives, and how the AI is charged.

An app or a website

Lovable is made for apps: logins, a database, payments and AI features inside the app. If you are building a product with users and data, that is a job Lovable does and Splitleaf does not. Splitleaf publishes static pages, with no database and no user accounts.

A marketing site, a blog or a docs site is a different job. Most websites do not need a database. They need pages that load fast and are easy to change for years.

Every message is metered

In Lovable, one balance of credits pays for building, chat, hosting and the AI features in your app. Lovable publishes its own examples: "Make the button gray" costs 0.50 credits, "Remove the footer" 0.90, and a landing page with images 2.00. On Pro, 100 credits a month cost $25, so a credit is $0.25. Monthly plan credits expire two months after they are issued.

In Splitleaf, you edit text and layout in the Designer and the Content pane yourself. When you want the agent, it runs on the Claude plan you already pay for, or on your own key. We add no markup.

Where the site lives

Lovable hosts every published app, on a lovable.app address or on your own domain. Your own domain needs a paid plan. On the Free plan, Lovable may unpublish a project for inactivity. Lovable says you own your code. Git sync with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket is on every plan, and downloading the code needs Pro.

In Splitleaf the site is already a folder on your disk. Every publish is a commit to your own GitHub repository, and the pages go to any static host you choose.

What AI costs

AI in Splitleaf
$0 to Splitleaf
  • Use Claude Code on the Claude plan you already pay for. No API key
  • Or connect your own key: Anthropic, OpenAI or OpenRouter
  • You pay the provider's price. We add no markup
  • No credits and no monthly allowance to run out
  • The agent panel shows the usage of each chat
AI in Lovable
Credits per workspace, per month
  • A credit is $0.25 on Pro and $0.50 on Business
  • "Make the button gray": 0.50 credits. A landing page with images: 2.00
  • Monthly credits expire two months after they are issued
  • The same balance pays for hosting and the AI inside your app

A credit is a meter that the platform sets. Your own key is a price that the model provider publishes. See how AI is charged in each tool.

What it costs over five years

These are list prices with yearly billing, in USD, before tax. Lovable prices by credits, not by people or sites, so each scenario names a credit tier.

ScenarioLovableSplitleaf
One person, Pro with 100 credits a month$1,250$129 + your AI and hosting
Three people, Pro with 400 credits a month$5,000$1,107 + your AI and hosting
Agency: five people, Pro with 800 credits a month$10,000$2,085 + your AI and hosting

How we counted:

  • Lovable. Pro at $250, $1,000 and $2,000 a year. Members are free on every plan; they share the credits.
  • Splitleaf. One license per person, plus a team seat at $72 a year for each person after the first.

This table is not like for like, and we want to say so. Lovable's price includes the AI, and hosting for most small apps. Splitleaf's price includes neither. You pay your host, and you pay your AI provider: the Claude plan you may already have, or your own key. We do not know how much AI your team will use, so add your own AI bill to the Splitleaf column.

The Splitleaf license includes 12 months of updates. The app you bought keeps working and publishing after that. A future major version is an optional paid upgrade.

Which one fits you

Choose Lovable if

  • You are building an app with logins, a database or payments
  • You want to describe it in a chat and have it hosted for you
  • Many people should build from one shared credit balance
  • You do not need the project on your own computer

Choose Splitleaf if

  • You are building a website: pages, a blog, docs
  • You want to edit pages and content yourself, with AI as a choice and not the only way in
  • You want the site as files on your computer and in your own GitHub repository
  • You want to pay for the tool once, and for AI at your provider's price
Our honest opinion

Lovable is good at what it is made for. You describe an app, and you get one with a database, logins and hosting, in an afternoon. For a prototype or a product with users, that is hard to beat, and Splitleaf does not try to do it.

A website is a different job. Most of its life is small changes over many years: a price, a post, a photo. In Lovable, the AI that changes the site runs on credits that expire, and the site runs on Lovable's hosting. Splitleaf keeps the site in a folder on your computer, lets you edit it directly, and leaves AI at your provider's price.

Questions

Do I own the code Lovable writes?
Lovable says you do. Git sync with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket is on every plan, and downloading the code needs a paid plan. If your app uses Lovable Cloud for its database and logins, those parts run on Lovable.
Does Lovable charge for hosting?
For most small apps, no: a monthly grant covers it. Apps with a lot of traffic or data use credits from the same balance that pays for building.
Can Splitleaf build an app with logins and a database?
No. Splitleaf publishes static websites: pages, a blog, docs, with content from its own CMS. If you need user accounts and a database, Lovable is the better tool.
Can I use my Claude subscription for AI in Splitleaf?
Yes. Select Claude Code as the agent, and Splitleaf uses the Claude account you sign in to it with. Usage counts against your Claude plan, so you need no API key and no credits. Every change is staged for you to keep or undo.
Who should choose Lovable?
People who build apps, prototypes and internal tools from a chat, and want hosting and a backend included. Lovable is a good product for that.
