The Publish screen

The Publish screen shows every change to your site as a card on a board.

The board has up to four steps: Your changes, Review, Staged, and Published.

/assets/flows-blog-staged.webm

A change moves from left to right, one step at a time.

You decide what moves. Nothing goes live until you send it forward.

This article explains the controls. For the publish procedure, see Publish your site.

Open the Publish screen

Click Publish in the main navigation. The Publish screen opens.

Note: A number on Publish shows how many changes wait for review.

The four steps

StepWhat it showsWhen it shows
Your changesChanges on your computer since your last publishAlways
ReviewChanges that people sent for reviewWhen the site has teammates, or when you sent changes
StagedChanges on the staging site that are not liveWhen the site has a staging address
PublishedEach publish, with everything it containedAlways

Notes:

  • The steps show side by side when they all fit. If the space is too narrow, the steps stack in one column.
  • The Agent panel takes space. Open it and the steps stack.
  • Staged has a link to the staging site. Published has a link to the live site.

The card

Each step shows its changes on a card.

The card has three parts:

  • The header. The header shows who made the changes and when.
  • The list. The list shows each change in a group: Pages, Content, Design, Components, Files, or Site.
  • The footer. Quiet actions are on the left. The way forward is on the right.

A row in the list

PartWhat it does
Check boxSelect the change for the next step
Icon and nameShow what changed, in friendly words. Example: "Home"
Conflict chipShow that the same item changed in more than one place
Status pillShow the kind of change, or where the change is
Eye buttonPreview a page as a teammate sent it (Review only)
… buttonOpen the row menu: See code changes, Discard

The status pill shows one of these words:

PillMeaning
NewThe item is new since the last publish
EditedThe item changed
RemovedThe item was deleted
For reviewYour item is in review, without more edits
StagedYour item is on the staging site, without more edits

Note: Edit an item again and the pill goes back to Edited.

The new version is only on your computer.

Decide what goes live

You publish what has a check mark. You keep the rest for later.

  1. Open the Publish screen.
  2. Remove the check mark from each change that must wait.
  3. Read the green button. The button counts what you selected. Example: "Publish 6 changes".
  4. Click the green button.
ControlResult
Select allAdd a check mark to every row on the card
Clear allRemove a check mark from every row on the card
Green buttonDo the next step for the selected changes
Arrow next to the green buttonShow the steps you can skip to

The green button always offers the next step. The arrow offers the steps after it.

Your roleButtons on the card
Owner or adminSend for review, Stage, Publish
EditorSend for review
ViewerNone

Notes:

  • Each card keeps its own check marks. A change in Review is not the same row as your change.
  • A card that nobody touched has a check mark on every row.
  • Staging needs a staging address. See Set up a staging domain.

See the difference

The steps speak about pages and items. The code view speaks about files and lines.

Use the code view when you want to see exactly what changed.

  1. Click the … button.
  2. Select See code changes.

Where you click decides what you see:

Where you clickWhat the view shows
… in the card headerEvery file behind the whole card
… on a rowThe files of that item only

The view has the files on the left and the differences on the right.

PartWhat it does
File listSelect a file. A tag shows New, Deleted, or Unchanged
Left columnThe last published version
Right columnThe version in this change, or the version on your computer
+ and − countsShow how many lines came and went
Grey gap rowHide unchanged lines. The row says how many

Notes:

  • The view opens the file that differs first.
  • Red is the old line. Green is the new line.
  • The view is read only. It does not publish, discard, or change anything.
  • An image or a font has no lines. The view says that the file was added, deleted, or replaced.
  • A very large file does not show its lines.
  • A change with many files lists the first 200 files.

A page in the list that you did not open. This is correct behavior.

A site-wide change travels with the page. Example: a style rule that every page reads.

The row menu shows this message: "Nothing changed in this item's own files."

Click See what changed to see the file that caused it.

Preview a page

Click the eye button on a row under Review.

The page opens in a separate window, as the teammate sent it.

Note: The eye button is quiet for a deleted page. A deleted page has nothing to show.

Conflicts

A row shows Conflict when the same item changed in more than one place.

Hold the pointer over the chip. The text says who else changed the item and gives a tip.

Nothing is overwritten by itself. Click Stage or Publish and the app asks you to decide.

  1. Click Compare to see both versions.
  2. Click Keep mine or Use theirs.
  3. Click Stage or Publish again.

Discard

Discard is in the row menu and in the card footer.

The word is the same in each step. The act is different in each step.

StepWhat Discard does
Your changesPuts the item back to your last publish. Your work on it is gone
ReviewTakes the item out of review. Your copy on this computer does not change
StagedTakes the item off the staging site. Staging goes back to what is live

Caution: Discard under Your changes cannot be undone.

A warning appears each time. Click Discard again to confirm. Click Cancel to stop.

Note: An unchecked change is safe. Only Discard removes work.

Published

The Published step shows each publish as a card.

ControlResult
Show allShow every publish, not only the last three
Show fewerShow only the last three publishes
Restore this versionSet your changes back to that publish

Restore does not publish. Your changes go back to that version.

Publish again to make it live.

Note: Only the site owner and admins can restore a version.

After the first publish, you select exactly which changes move on.
